Rameshwaram, an island in Tamilnadu has a famous temple of Lord Rama, which is considered one of the most sacred pilgrim centres for Hindus. The South Indian Temples stand out for their richness and grandiose, which is well exhibited by the exceptional architectural style developed in Dravida Desom. Most of the temples have ornate towers that are set in a square base and 'gopurams'.

The outer wall encompasses the main shrine along with other smaller shrines. Most of the temples in South India were built during the reigns of the Cholas, the Pandavas and the Vijayanagar rulers, who were great patrons of temple architecture.

Temples in Tamilnadu

Kanchipuram: Touted as one of India's Seven Sacred cities, Kanchipuram was the capital of the Pallava Kings. It has been a centre of Tamil learning for many centuries and even now it holds a special place in the pilgrimage circuits of South India. A south India temple tour would enable you to cover some of the must see temples in your life time.

Mahabalipuram: It is famous for its spectacular rock-cut architecture and structural building. The temples belong to different categories like open air base - relief, structured temples, man-made caves and 'rathas', which are inspired by the Buddhist monasteries. The shore temple, which stands atop a rocky cliff, is a visual delight in the golden rays of the sun.

Temples in Andhra Pradesh

Tirupati Balaji Temple: Located in the Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh, Tirupathi is dedicated to Lord Venkatesh and is one of the richest temples in the world.

Sri Kapileswaraswami Temple: Located at a distance of 3 to 4 Km at the foot of the Tirumala hills, it holds the rare distinction of being the only temple in Tirupathi which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Annual festivals like Skhanda Shasthi and Annabhishekam draw scores of pilgrims from all over the country and abroad. The sacred waterfall called "Kapila Teertham" is also located here.

Temples in Kerala

Guruvayur Sri Krishna : Is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Krishna, located in the town of Guruvayur in Kerala, India. It is one of the most important places of worship for Hindus of Kerala and is often referred to as "Bhuloka Vaikunta" which translates to the "Holy Abode of Vishnu on Earth". The idol installed at Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple represents a form of Krishna with its four arms carrying the conch Pancajanya, the magical discus with serrated edges Sudarshana Chakra, the mace Kaumodaki and a lotus with a boly basil garland. This idol represents the majestic form of god Vishnu as revealed to Vasudeva and Devaki around the time of Krishna; hence Guruvayur is also known as "Dwaraka of South India". Krishna is popularly known in Kerala by different names such as Kannan, Unnikkannan ("Baby" Kannan), Unnikkrshnan, Balakrshnan, and Guruvayurappan.

Shree Padmanabhaswamy temple :  Is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu located in Thiruvananthapuram, India. The shrine is currently run by a trust headed by the royal family of Travancore. The Temple is a replica of the famous Sri Adikesavaperumal Temple at Thiruvattar. Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple gave its name to Kerala’s state capital Thiruvananthapuram. ‘Thiru’ ‘Anantha’ ‘Puram’ means Sacred Abode of Lord Anantha Padmanabha. The city is also known as Anandapuram and Syananduram Ananda refers to Shree Padmanabha Himself. The Principal Deity, Padmanabhaswamy, is enshrined in the "Anantha-sayanam" posture (in the eternal sleep of Yoga-nidra on the serpent Anantha). South India temple tour will help you to cover some of these temples in kerala.
